A richly detailed illustration, created with the faith community
At the heart of this sign is a stunning cut-away illustration by artist Sophie Hardwicke. It depicts a mosque in active use. The artwork has been developed in collaboration with members of the Muslim faith community, ensuring authenticity, accuracy and cultural sensitivity throughout. Rich in carefully researched detail, it features a minbar, the Qiblah wall, a mihrab, a minaret, and much more — giving pupils an immersive, visually engaging window into the practice of Islamic worship and the community life of a mosque.
Sophie Hardwicke’s illustrations are a hallmark of the What Happens in…? series, striking the ideal balance between artistic quality and educational purpose. Every element is chosen to prompt discussion, curiosity, and deeper understanding.
Curriculum relevance
Islam is a core world religion within the UK RE curriculum, studied widely in both primary and secondary settings. The What Happens in…? series is trusted by schools and teachers across the country to make RE engaging, accessible, and meaningful. This sign, in conjunction with the hand-out illustration and teaching resource booklet available from the RE Teaching Resources website, supports pupils in exploring key Islamic concepts. It works equally well as a standalone classroom display or as part of a coordinated set covering all six faiths in the range.
About RE Today
RE Today is the UK’s leading organisation supporting religious education in schools, providing high-quality CPD, publications, and classroom resources to teachers and local authorities nationwide. The What Happens in…? series is one of their most popular and enduring resource ranges, and we’re delighted to be making the illustrations from that range available in large-format print for the first time.
The full range
This sign is one of six in the What Happens in…? series. The complete range covers a Buddhist centre, a Christian church, a Sikh gurdwara, a Hindu mandir, a mosque, and a synagogue — available individually or as a full set to create a striking world faiths display.
